In April Varna was nominated by an independent jury to take part of the competition for European Youth Capital (EYC) for 2017. The other candidates are the cities of Cascais (Portugal), Galway (Ireland), Newcastle (UK), Perugia (Italy). All of them now proceed to the next round of the competition.
Varna almost won the title for 2016, but this year the city took the challenge once more. The primary goals of this year's nomination are oriented towards social entrepreneurship, sustainable solutions in employment, creative work and arts, networking, exchange and education. Through this year's social proposals, Varna will become a meeting point for innovative ideas, creativity and an alternative thinking.
The European Youth Capital is a title, awarded for the period of one year and the winner is given the opportunity to develop and present its youth-oriented life. This includes a huge number of activities regarding cultural, social and political life. The young people are encouraged to take part of these activities and suggest their vision for the future of other youth-related projects in the European Union. The first time this happened was in 2009, and the first city chosen as an European Youth Capital was Rotterdam.
